AUGSBURG, imperial city library -- [Georg HENISCH (1549-1618).] Bibliothecae inclytae reipub. Augustanae utriusque tum Graecae tum Latinae librorum & impressorum & manu exaratorum catalogus. Augsburg: Valentin Schönigk, 1600.

Agenda chancery 4o (287 x 95 mm). Collation: A-Z Aa-Zz Aaa-Zzz Aaaa-Kkkk4 L1112. Italic, roman and gothic types. Type-ornament title-border and woodcut vignette. Contemporary binding of 15th-century vellum manuscript. Cloth folding box. Provenance: Augsburg, Evangelical College (18th-century engraved pictorial bookplate by L.M. Steinberger).

FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND-EARLIEST CATALOGUE OF AN INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARY (following Petrus Bertius's Nomenclator of Leyden University Library in 1595). The unacknowledged compiler was Augsburg city librarian since c. 1580, as well as editor of Greek texts (including Homer), physician and astronomer. It is clearly a superior piece of work, with an astonishingly accomplished index (arranged by first names) that accounts for authors of secondary texts, editors, etc.

EXTREMELY RARE AND IN VERY FINE CONDITION. It is said that only 100 copies were printed (Taylor p. 94). NUC locates a single copy in the United States (Indiana), and one copy is recorded in Germany (VD 16, H-1903). Taylor p. 45; Breslauer and Folter 41.
