Lot Essay

While in Brussels, where Allebé lived as of 1868, the painter felt free to disengage himself from the Amsterdam artistic milieu and to chose a different style of painting. During these years he moved towards a more objective form of naturalism even though his productivity was relatively low. The present lot is a fine example of this period where Allebé used stronger colours and strived for a higher degree of tonality.
