An extensive collection of autograph letters of 19th-century writers, politicians and scientific figures, including autograph letters signed by Christina ROSSETTI (n.d., 'as any pleasure my things have been so fortunate as to give you is but intangible, I am happy that you are unable to inconvenience yourself as much as you propose', one page, 8vo), Hannah MORE (three), Mrs GASKELL (fragment, 'are we to be "stimulant", or "soporific"'?), Maria EDGEWORTH, John RUSKIN, Alfred WALLACE, Lajos KOSSUTH (submitting an article, 1854), William Collins, W.E. Gladstone, Henry Brougham, W.C. Bryant, Edwin Landseer, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Daniel Maclise, Louis Blanc and others; letters signed by Queen Victoria, William Pitt and others; a single line of music attributed to Franz LISZT (an arpeggio exercise); an autograph quotation signed by Henry Wadsworth LONGFELLOW (a quatrain, 'The night shall be filled with music', signed and dated '25 June 1867); and a collection of signatures (on cards, or cut), including Alfred, Lord TENNYSON, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Wilkie Collins, Harriet Martineau and others; in total approximately 75 letters, 56 cut signatures, three poems and a music manuscript; a number of correspondents illustrated with photographs; laid down or tipped in on the pages of an album, 4to, brown morocco gilt (scuffed), gilt edges.
