BANCROFT, George (1800-91). History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent, Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1854. 6 volumes, 8° (222 x 143mm). Engraved frontispiece in volumes I, II and IV, plates. (Offsetting from some plates, lightly spotted.) Contemporary calf, sides ruled in blind, flat spine ruled in compartments, contrasting lettering-pieces, marbled edges (a few light scuff marks). Fifteenth edition, first published in 1834. "The variations between the first and later editions are so considerable as to make it desirable to posses them both" (Sabin 3116).
