Lot Essay

Dr. Sophie Bowness will include this sculpture in her forthcoming revised Hepworth catalogue raisonné under the catalogue number BH 227.

An enlargement of the present work was commissioned by the John Lewis Partnership for the south-east wall of their flagship store on London's Oxford Street. The enlarged version, which is made of sheet aluminum, was unveiled on 23 April 1963 and continues to grace the side of the prominent department store building.
