Lot Essay

This drawing is related to a painting of 1812 later destroyed by Gérard together with another version painted in 1804. The picture is known through a line engraving (fig. 1) reproduced in H. Gérard, Oeuvre du Baron Gérard, Paris, 1856. A related oil on paper study was at Christie's, London, 21 November 1996, lot 11.
