Lot Essay

The house shown in the present drawing reappears in other works by Breenbergh, such as drawings in the Albertina, Vienna (M. Roethlisberger, Bartholomäus Breenbergh, Handzeichnungen, Berlin, 1969, no. 34) and formerly on the art market (Sotheby's, London, 7 July 1966, lot 78). It also appears, from an almost identical viewpoint, in a drawing by Paul Bril (1554-1626) in the Louvre (F. Lugt, Musée du Louvre: Inventaire général des dessins des écoles du nord: École flamande, Paris, 1949, I, no. 424).
