Lot Essay

Another version of this composition, signed and dated 1647, is in the Mauritshuis, The Hague (exhibited, New York, Richard Feigen Gallery, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, 1991, cat. no. 24, reproduced). And another panel by Breenbergh of this subject from 1647 is in the Museum at Grenoble (M. Roethlisberger, Bartholomeus Breenbergh. The Paintings, Berlin-New York, 1981, p. 88, cat. no. 226, reproduced) which follows a very similar compositional arrangement, with Diana again seen from behind, but with the figures to the right of the picture.

We are grateful to Prof. M. Roethlisberger for endorsing the attribution based on photographs (written communication, 24 March 2013).
