Following the precedent set by Alexander Davison after the Battle of the Nile in 1798, the wealthy industrialist and entrepreneur Matthew Boulton commissioned and paid for this medal to be presented to every man in the fleet who had been at Trafalgar, the metal used varying according to the recipient's rank.
