FIRST EDITION. 'Beaumont was the first to study digestion and the movements of the stomach in vivo. His work on the subject was the most important before Pavlov' (Garrison & Morton 989). As army surgeon at Ft. Mackinac, Michigan, Beaumont treated a gunshot wound which healed leaving a permanent hole in the stomach wall through which he made his experiments and observations.
