BEERBOHM, Max -- George SANTAYANA. Some Turns of Thought in Modern Philosophy, Cambridge: At the University press, 1933. 8° (191 x 125mm). Half title. Original pictorial cloth, lettering-piece on spine.
MAX BEERBOHM'S PRESENTATION COPY TO SIEGFRIED SASSOON. The front free endpaper is inscribed, "For Siegfried because the royal - though scholarly and eminently dreary - man on the cover might interest him. He (the man) is about five years old; senior therefore to George, who I hope will never [underlined] look like him. Max 1938." The 'man on the cover' referred to is an original drawing of a figure by Beerbohm on the front cover of the present copy, its head formed of the stamped crest of the Royal Society of Literature. Loosely-inserted are various letters including a card from Max Beerbohm referring to Sassoon and a fund to buy a clavichord for the Poet Laureate, a letter from Alan Dent to Sassoon regarding the formation of 'The Maximilian Society', and various photographs of Beerbohm in Rapallo.
