Lot Essay

John Scott's engraving was published by Sherwood, Nealey and Jones for their 'Sportsman's Repository, or A Correct Delineation of the Horse and Dog', with the plate inscribed to Jacob Wardell, presumably the owner of both the original painting and the ponies. The accompanying description reads: 'The plate exhibits from the life and in their natural state, a Shetlander or poney of the Scottish Isles, a New Forester, and a Welsh poney, the last of which ran and won a remarkable race on the road some years since'.
