Lot Essay

This painting is a study for Leader's Royal Academy entry of 1893, By Mead and Stream, which is now in the Burnley Museum, England. Another study for this painting was sold Christie's New York, November 2, 1995 (lot 219A). According to Ruth Wood, "This summer scene is of Gomshall Marshes, Surrey, with the houses of the village of Abinger Hammer in the background. This location is only a short distance from Burrows Cross where the artist resided from 1889 until his death in 1923....(the study) is a delightful painting so typical of Leader's late style of the English countryside."

We are grateful to Dr. Ruth Wood for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
