FIRST EDITION, MONOGRAPH ISSUE of Bernard's seminal work on the role of the pancreas. "In 1846 Bernard began studying the pancreatic juices and their role in digestion ... By observing the processes of digestion in dogs and rabbits, and by experimentation with pure pancreatic juices collected from temporary pancreatic fistulae, Bernard was able to show that pancreatic juices made fats absorbable by breaking them down into fatty acids and glycerine" (Grolier Medicine). The present work represents the final and most complete statement of Bernard's discoveries concerning the pancreas. It was published in Volume I of the supplement to Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des sances de l'Acadmie des Sciences, and also in a small separate issue, of which the present copy is an example. Grmek 20; Grolier Medicine 67b (this copy exhibited); Waller 964; Norman 202.
