Lot Essay

Bernard Sleigh was born in Birmingham, where he both studied and taught at the Birmingham School of Art. Exhibiting at the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts, Sleigh was strongly influenced by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, as the current lot illustrates. With a strong pre-Raphaelite, medieval and Christian sentiment to his work, the multi-faceted artist's legacy can also be found in murals, stained-glass, wood-cuts and book illustrations.
