BEROSUS the Chaldean (fl. c.340-c.270 B.C.). De antiquitate Italiae, ac totius orbis. Edited and augmented by Joannes Annius. Lyons: Jean Temporal, 1555.
Volume I (only, of 2), 16° (121 x 76mm). Woodcut printer's device on title [Baudrier no.1]. Woodcut headbands and initials. Ruled throughout in red. Retaining blank ù4. (Scattered light spotting, some quires a little browned.)
BINDING: Parisian mid 16th-century tan morocco gilt, boards with painted central arms of Gian Federigo Madruzzo [cf. Guigard II, p.334 for a later variant], enclosed by strapwork on a semé of pointillé tools, the strapwork with black-painted foliate ornaments, triple gilt fillet borders, gilt board-edges, spine gilt in compartments with foliate tools, lettered in gilt at the head, edges gilt and gauffered with a pointillé foliate pattern (spine slight cracked and skilfully repaired at head and tail). A FINE, PAINTED STRAPWORK BINDING FROM THE LIBRARY OF GIAN FEDERIGO MADRUZZO (1531-1586). Born to a patrician family in Trento, Gian Federigo Count of Avi and Marquess of Soriano, studied in Paris in his youth, before becoming a soldier (fighting against the Turks in Hungary), and then following a diplomatic career. In 1569 Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, made him a knight of the order of the Santissima Annunziata and from 1574 until 1586 he served as ambassador to the Papal Court. This binding is one of a group of some 30 or so from his library that are known (cf. P. Culot 'Un bibliophile du Trentin, Gian Federigo Madruzzo (1531-1586). Les reliures frappées à ses armoires', Bulletin du bibliophile, 1997, pp. 148-153), and probably dates from the years between the volume's publication in 1555 and 1569, when Madruzzo was elevated to the order of the Santissima Annunziata in 1569, after which time the arms on his bindings have the chain of order around them. The bindings appear to have been executed in Paris and, in this instance and others, had the arms added later, possibly in Italy.
