THE DANGERS, BOTH TO HEALTH AND POCKET, OF HAMBURG'S BARS. Borchert reproves his correspondent for retreating to Gebersheim, when Hamburg's bars are open to all, although the schnaps is ruinously expensive and often adulterated: 'Hier in Hamburg kann man schon wieder in sämtlichen Bars, bis das Gesicht zerknittert ist. Und nicht nur das Gesicht, auch der Geldbeutel, denn ein Glas Schnaps kostet allgemein 12.-- Und man weiß nie, ob man hinterher tot umfällt, denn es ist nicht alles Schnaps, was stinkt'. He goes on to ask for Goes's frank opinion of a poem, whether it should be published or not -- 'mit 25 Jahren macht man manchen Fehler, den man mit 39 nicht mehr macht' -- and concludes with reference to the accompanying copy of his collection of poems, Laterne, Nacht und Sterne.
Borchert was by now already severely ill with hepatitis contracted via an infected cut during his enforced service on the Eastern front. He was to die in a hepatitis sanitorium in Basle on 20 November 1947. The writer and theologian Albrecht Goes (1908-2000) had served as a pastor with the Wehrmacht during the war, retreating to parish service in Gebersheim, near Stuttgart, in the post-war years. (2)
