BOTHWELL, James Hepburn, Earl of (1536?-1578). Letter signed ('James erle bothwell'), to an unidentified recipient, announcing the appointment of deputies, Craigmeller, 19 November 1566, signed at the foot, 24 lines written in dark brown ink in a neat hand, spaces left blank for the deputies' names, one page, 260 x 260 mm, papered signet seal (lightly mounted on paper).
Bothwell announces that he has appointed deputies in the office of the sheriff of Berwick to find and arrest John Aickin, Stephen Symontown, Patrick Acheson and others, of Dernchester, 'graden oure soverans rebellis', giving further instructions for dealing with them.
Written six months before Bothwell's marriage to Mary Queen of Scots.
