Lot Essay

This watch was sold to Prince Frédéric-Guillaume-Louis de Prusse, second son of the King, on 3 May 1814 for 1248 Francs.

Frederic William Louis IV, King of Prussia, was born in Berlin on 15 October 1795. As a result of his promise to introduce reforms, a committment he did not uphold, his accession to the throne in 1840 was greeted with enthusiasm. Forced to enact a more liberal constitution, he then continued to modify the terms. He prefered the politics of a "Little Germany" as proposed by his minister Radewitz and refused to accept the Imperial Crown offered to him by the Frankfurt Assembly in 1849.

In 1858, due to illness, he renounced to the throne in favour of his brother Wilhelm I and died in Potsdam in 1861.
