Details
British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909 Sir Ernest Henry SHACKLETON (1874-1922) and others. - A 4pp. menu Luncheon given to Sir Ernest H. Shackleton, C.V.O. By the members of the British Antarctic Expedition (1907-1909) in celebration of the well deserved honour conferred upon him by His Majesty the King to-day December 13th, 1909, 17.8 x 11.4cm., upper cover printed with photogravure view of the 'Winter Quarters, Cape Royds', lower cover blank but signed in pencil 12 participants (Shackleton, Bernard O. Day, William Roberts, John King Davis, George Marston, Campbell Mackellar, George Buckley, Ernest Joyce, Alfred Reid, Alister Forbes Mackay, Aeneas Mackintosh, Philip Brocklehurst) and initialled F.[rank] W.[ild?], edged in gilt. (Small tear to fold, some soiling). Provenance: Frank Wild (pencilled initials on lower cover). An evocative memento of what was probably one of the most joyful occasions of Shackleton's career as an explorer: since his return to London in June 1909 he and his companions had been fêted wherever they went. Edward VII had conferred the CVO on him in July, the Government made him a grant of £20,000 to cover the debts of the Expedition in August, and his knighthood was announced in the autumn. The light-hearted nature of the meal is reflected in the food on offer: 'Oeufs Pochés d'Erebus', 'Suprêmes de Sole Buckley', 'Poularde Sautée Shackleton', 'Haricots Verts à la Nimrod', 'Caneton Ross', 'Buffet Antarctic', 'Gâteau Emily'.
