Martinborough was born in St Kitts in 1778 and came to England in 1794 and was employed as a servant to Captain Mudge of the 'Hind'. He apparently 'demeaned himself with the utmost Propriety, good Humour and praise-worthy Behaviour' until, succumbing to the 'dangerous and fatal Effects of Passion', he murdered the ship's carpenter with a 'Carving-Knife'.
