RARE FIRST EDITION of this collection of color-printed portraits of the Pope and members of the Sacred College of Cardinals by Andreas Brogiotti, director of the Stamperia Vaticana. Among the cardinals portrayed is Cardinal Richelieu on E3. Little is known about Brogiotti (or Brugiotti), who was at various points in his life a bookseller and publisher, and later civic treasurer of Rome. Also in 1628 he published the Indice de caratteri, the type specimen of the Vatican Press--the earliest type specimen book. Among his other published works are two volumes of verse, and he edited an edition of the vulgate in pocket format. All his published works were dedicated to the Barberini family. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, no copy has appeared at auction in at least the last 35 years. Firmin-Didot 384 ("Livre rare").
