BRUNET, Jacques-Charles (1780-1867). Manuel du libraire et de l'amateur de livres. Paris: Brunet and Leblanc, 1810.

8o (195 x 120 mm), 3 volumes. Complete, with the half-titles. (Slightly browned.) Contemporary French tree calf, flat spine gold-tooled in compartments, red morocco lettering pieces, (binding slightly worn in places).

FIRST EDITION of the most influential and most frequently consulted bibliography for booksellers and collectors, still in use today in its fifth edition (1860-65) or reprints. Surely no other single person before or since can have ranged as widely as Brunet in cataloguing and valuing rare books. The systematic catalogue of less valuable books (vol. 3) forms a much underrated source of bibliographical information. Breslauer & Folter 118. (3)
