This German translation of Brunfels's important Herbarum vivae icones, the first and only translation into the vernacular, contains for the first time a substantial introduction by Brunfels, and a register of illnesses and their herbal remedy. 44 new woodcuts which appear only in this edition join 86 woodcuts from the first volume of the Latin editon and 46 from the second volume. Most of these are by Hans Weiditz, although other artists, including one signed I.K., provided many in the second part.

Provenance: a few annotations, dated 1609 and 1612 -- 17th-century inscription of a Franciscan friary partly erased form title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
