Lot Essay

The view towards Bazincourt was to fascinate Pissarro up to the end of his life, and the orchard behind his house with the view of Bazincourt beyond provides the subject for the present painting. The artist explored the view beyond his property, looking out from his window, over the uncluttered meadows, to Bazincourt in the distant trees. The area became his single favourite subject, which, over the years, he recorded the passage of time, the changing of seasons and varying weather conditions.

In a letter to Christie's dated 7 May 1981, John Rewald kindly confirmed that the present painting is no. 720 in Pissarro and Venturi's catalogue raisonn of the artist's work, where the measurements recorded are incorrect.
