Lot Essay

According to the Artistischen Notizenblatt (vol. xix, 1822), Carus concieved of this painting on a trip to the Alps, making sketches whilst staying at the Sennenhütte on St. Gotthard, Switzerland. A preparatory pencil study for this painting, probably made on this trip, titled Zwei Adler auf der Felsenspitze, is in the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett Dresden.
