Lot Essay

Comparable drawings by Vimercati are in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Venice (U. Ruggeri, Disegni Lombardi, Milan, 1982, nos. 150-152) and in the Ambrosiana, Milan (A. Barigozzi and R. Bossaglia, Disegni del settecento lombardo, Vicenza, 1973, no. 97-98). Further drawings by Vimercati were exhibited at Colnaghi's, London, in 1989, no. 20, with Jean-François Baroni's in Paris in 1991, nos. 19-20, and sold at Christie's, London, 1 July 1997, lots 68-69. Another nude by the same hand was exhibited by E. Testori (Dessins anciens de l'école lombarde, Paris, 2001, no. 26, as Porta).
Vimercati was active in Milan and was a pupil of Ercole Procaccini the Younger.
