Half-title, 32pp. publisher's advertisements at end. 3 folding coloured maps, 18 plates, extra-illustrated with tipped-in 4pp. ALS dated 1902 to 'Mr. Coffin'. Original blue cloth, upper cover blocked in gilt and silver, spine blocked in gilt, t.e.g.

Mr. Coffin (presentation inscription from the author, dated 'New York 8th 1902', on the half-title).

FIRST EDITION, a fine presentation copy of 'one of the most important [books] in the Antarctic bibliography' (Rosove). The 4pp. autograph letter signed from Borchgrevink to 'Dear Mr. Coffin', dated New York 14 March 1902, concerns Borchgrevink's future plans 'I wish to set out Southwards again to continue and complete my study of the Antarctic Continent. I should require about $200.000. ... I could start next August' and mentioning the book 'In regard to my book... I may say that do not myself like it -- but time-pressure of many kinds did not give me that rest and peace of mind while writing it which I ought to have had'.
