Lot Essay

Although a resident of Paris since 1947, the paintings of Chafic Abboud are indebted to his homeland of Lebanon. As a child, Abboud loved the purity of Lebanon's nature, its rolling hills, its mountain peaks, and its golden sand. Above all, he loved the light. Bright and crisp, the rays of the sun infused Lebanon's beautiful scenery with magnificent colour. Sharp, soft, contrasted or transparent, the varying light, depending on the hour of the day, illuminated natural wonders to brilliant affect, making it a painter's paradise. Embedded in his memory, these images served as the source for Abboud's canvases.
