Lot Essay

The scene depicts the moment as the doomed Candaules, King of Lydia, shows the beauty of his wife to Gyges, the King's most trusted bodyguard. The Queen spots Gyges and forces him to kill the King for this outrage, which he does, before usurping the throne.
