Charles Edward Perugini was a Neapolitan who settled in London in 1863. He was a protégé of Frederic Leighton, possibly his studio assistant, and their styles have much in common. In 1873 he married Kate Dickens, daughter of the novelist Charles and widow of the Pre-Raphaelite painter Charles Allston Collins.
