TARKA
Tarka the Otter: His Joyful Water-Life and Death in the Country of the Two Rivers was illustrated by Tunnicliffe for the author Henry Williamson.
Written in 1927, the novel begins with Tarka's birth and early life. After his den is attacked by poachers he becomes separated from his family, and spends his life on the run from hunters.
Williamson took refuge in the Devon countryside after being deeply affected by his experiences during the First World War. It was here that he decided to pen Tarka. The novel was very well received and won the Hawthornden Prize for Literature in 1928.
