Lot Essay

In the present work, Shaw used Jeu des Reines Renommees cards issued in 1644 by the French academician Jean Des-Maret. The purpose of these cards was to impart instruction to the young king, Louis XIV. Shaw also incorporated into the present work ancient gaming counters. The cards and the gaming counters are mounted on an early 18th century leather book cover.
