Howorth was born in New Zealand and exhibited New Zealand landscapes regularly from 1883-1940. He co-founded the Invercargill Art Society in 1893 and moved to Wanganui probably in 1912 where he was an early member of the Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society. His work was included in the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington in 1940
