With the later inscription on the second drawing, Charles Jouas records the destruction caused to the cathedral of Reims by a German bombardment in September 1914. He published an album of 71 engravings of the destruction of Reims during the First World War, entitled 'Reims dévasté' in 1932. Jouas was an architectural draughtsman and engraver, who especially made engravings of the great cathedrals of France.
