Lot Essay

These drawings belong to a series executed in red chalk with pen and brown ink annotations and of similar size, several of which were engraved to illustrate François Robichon de la Guerinière's L’Ecole de Cavalerie, contenant la connoissance, l’instruction et la conservation du cheval published in 1733 (the first edition of 1729-1732 was not illustrated); others, such as the present pair, were not used directly for the illustrations. Tardieu's engraving for Terre-à-terre shows the horses in a similar pose (in reverse) to the drawing, but lined up one behind the other, rather than back-to-back as in the drawing.
