Mackintosh recorded in his diary that he made a watercolour of the Arch of Titus on the afternoon of 22 April 1891. He made a number of more finished watercolours such as this while in Italy. Unlike the sketchbook drawings they are conceived as pictures in their own right; this view of the Arch of Titus is fresh and direct in handling and one of the most spontaneous of the group.
