Drawn in 1895 when Mackintosh visited Dorset and Somerset. Another drawing of Montacute House, a front elevation, is in a dismembered sketchbook (from which this drawing was once contained) at the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. This is an unusually complete drawing, as many of the pages of Mackintosh's Sketchbooks contain only the briefest of jottings. By including elements of the garden and indicating the sky beyond the house Mackintosh approaches the style of some of his formal perpective drawings such as those for Martyr's Public School, Queen Margaret Medical College and the Glasgow Herald building.

Montacute must have made a considerable impression on Mackintosh and at least one commentator has noted the close relationship between the fenestration of Montacute House and the north elevation of the Glasgow School of Art, designed in 1896.
