Lot Essay

There is no evidence that Mackintosh had produced a version of The Wassail for Dunglass Castle, but like Margaret's watercolour The May Queen, this drawing shows no signs of squaring up for enlargement into the gesso panel installed at Ingram Street. Like Margaret's companion watercolour it remains one of the largest and most elaborate imaginative designs of the early Glasgow years.
