Lot Essay

Known primarily as a studio potter, Vyse studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1905-1910), where he was awarded a travelling scholarship to Italy. Initially working for Doulton, he opened his own studio with his wife, Nell, in Chelsea in 1919. After the studio was bombed in 1940, the couple moved to Farnham, where Vyse taught at the art school.
