Chris Levine (b. 1960)
James Danziger explains: ‘In 2008, after seeing Chris Levine's groundbreaking portrait of the Queen for the first time, I went to London to meet the photographer and see if we could exhibit his work. As his iconic image of the Queen with her eyes closed had already been issued in several sizes, we arranged for David Adamson of Adamson Editions – generally considered the world's leading digital printer – to print an edition of 25 archival pigment prints at 30 x 24 inches. The photograph was exhibited for the first time in Miami in 2011 and in my gallery in 2012. The edition rapidly sold out, including one purchase by the Saatchi Collection who featured it in their first photography exhibition, ‘Out of Focus’, in 2012. This Rorschach of an image – some felt it was a wonderful contemplative Zen moment, others that it was too personal or private – became the definitive image of the Queen during her Diamond Jubilee.’
