Lot Essay

Christoffel van den Berghe was a Middelburg painter primarily known for his painted landscapes in the tradition of Jan Breughel I and floral still lifes derived from those by his townsman Ambrosius Bosschaert I. This painting—a rare religious subject for the artist—is dated 1617, making it, alongside a floral still life in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the earliest dated work by the artist.
