The horse-shoe bend of the Severn is a subject, from this
particular viewpoint on an escarpment near Littledean, that Steer
painted several times in 1909, at the height of his panoramic vision.
The most ambitious version (Aberdeen Art Gallery) shows a move away
from mere representation towards heightened expression as changes of
light begin to affect his work. Steer's painting companion and Slade
Professor Fred Brown (1851-1941) painted a similar composition from
almost the same spot in 1909.
