Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr E. J. Wolleswinkel of the Stichting Iconographisch Bureau, The Hague, for identifying the coat-of-arms as those belonging to the Briel family from Delft. The present sitter was also painted (aged 33) in 1615 by Mierevelt in a three-quarter-length portrait.
