CIVIL WAR - THE BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA
A collection of American civil war objects consisting of 23 Confederate dollar bills (1 x $500, 1 x $100, 2 x $50, 5 x $10, 14 x $5). 3 army belt buckles, one labelled 'Chickamauga' on the reverse, 7 brass uniform buttons embossed with the American eagle, 3 musket balls and a collection of lead bullets, all contained in a deal box, the like inscribed '163 American Civil War Records.' A printed label, also present in the box, indicates that three of the larger bullets are 'Mini Balls. Gathered from off the battlefields of Chickamauga, Lookout Mt., Mission Ridge ...1863. Souvenir 1890. C.M. Bradt & Co., Chattanooga, Tenn.'
The purchase of these civil war relics, during his 1890-91 lecture tour of the United States, must have been a poignant reminder to Stanley of his enlistment in the 6th Arkansas regiment and his ten months' service with the Confederate forces, ending with his capture at the battle of Shiloh on 6 April 1862 at the age of only 21.
