Lot Essay

This drawing is one of a set of seventeen entitled Scènes humoristiques engraved by the amateur artist and collector Comte de Caylus. Two other sheets from this series were offered in these Rooms, 30 March 1971, lot 25 and at Christie's New York, 28 January 1999, lot 117 and five are in the Louvre (J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire général des dessins de l'école française, Paris, 1911, nos. 4221-4).
