FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, one of 748 copies in this rare cloth binding with gilt edges (about 10 times rarer than cloth copies without gilt edges), illustrated, 4 pp. advertisements at end, with pencilled inscription by the Twain bibliographer Merle Johnson on front endpaper: "First ed - thin paper - blank page before contents, Merle Johnson."
