CLEMENT VII, Pope [Guilio de' Medici, 1478-1534]. Letter signed ('V[oste]r Fr[ater] Vicecancell[iere]') to Paolo Vettori, Admiral of the Papal Fleet, n.p., 2 September 1521, in Italian, ½ page, folio, integral address leaf (slight wear to lower margin), in a folder of gilt vellum on stiff boards. Writing as Vicechancellor of the papal government under the Papacy of Leo X (his cousin, Giovanni de' Medici), the future Clement VII gives instructions on measures to be taken against Genoese shipping: on the matter of a ship, a brigantine in the pay of Antonietto Adorno and a galley referred to in his correspondent's letters, he will seek advice from the pontiff; as regards a vessel taken by the Portoveneresi: 'vederete dipigliare in mare et non altrove qualche cosa di loro sotto nome della armata di n[ostr]o s[ignor]e: Intalmodo habbino causa di restituirvi le vre' (see you take anything of theirs at sea and nowhere else in the name of our lord's fleet: in this way they may have cause to return you yours). Guilio de' Medici began his disastrous pontificate in 1523. His antagonisation of Spain led to the devastating sack of Rome in 1527; his reign also saw the confirmation of the religious schism in Germany and the secession of the Church in England under Henry VIII.
