Lot Essay

The recurring theme of a fragmented modelling of the human figure was inspired by a pile of wood shavings that Maddox once saw. He felt that the detritus of carpentry had a life of its own. He reconstituted in paint shapes that had assembled by chance on the workman's floor. In this respect, the 'wood shavings' series are recordings of accidental and automatic processes and so attest to the workings of chance, by which the surrealists put great store.

We are very grateful to Silvano Levy for preparing this catalogue entry.
