(Lacking final blank; tear in blank margin of title repaired; small hole affecting one letter on A2.) 19th-century straight-grained black morocco tooled in blind (corners and spine rubbed). Provenance: Luton bookplate.

ONLY EDITION IN ENGLISH. Translated from Latin, probably by William Marshall, who was also the publisher, at the request of Thomas Cromwell. He translated and published several works attacking the papacy commissioned and paid for by Cromwell. He sent Cromwell two copies of this book 'excellent for defacing the pope of Rome', cf. W.A.Clebsch, England's earliest Protestants (1964) p.255. The book contains the short document of the 'Donation of Constantine', a supposed grant to Pope Silvester of spiritual supremacy and temporal dominion over all countries in the West. This is followed by Lorenzo Valla's 'declamation', with a preface by Ulrich Hutten 'agaynst the fayned and falsely forged donation or gyfte of Constantyne'. STC 5641 (lists 7 copies, including the present, one of two Bute copies (see below)).
